AMAZING - Weirdest Diseases [Jun. 21st, 2007|10:05 pm]
[mood | mellow]

10 Weirdest Diseases

Elephantiasis: grossly enlarged members

Lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, is best known from dramatic photos of people with grossly enlarged or swollen arms and legs. The disease is caused by parasitic worms, including Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and B. timori, all transmitted by mosquitoes. Lymphatic filariasis currently affects 120 million people worldwide, and 40 million of these people have serious disease. When an infected female mosquito bites a person, she may inject the worm larvae, called microfilariae, into the blood. The microfilariae reproduce and spread throughout the bloodstream, where they can live for many years. Often disease symptoms do not appear until years after infection. As the parasites accumulate in the blood vessels, they can restrict circulation and cause fluid to build up in surrounding tissues. The most common, visible signs of infection are excessively enlarged arms, legs, genitalia, and breasts.

Progeria: the 80-Year-Old Children

Progeria is caused by a single tiny defect in a child's genetic code, but it has devastating and life-changing consequences. On average, a child born with this disease will be dead by the age of 13. As they see their bodies fast forward through the normal process of ageing they develop striking physical symptoms, often including premature baldness, heart disease, thinning bones and arthritis. Progeria is extremely rare, there are only around 48 people living with it in the whole world. However, there is a family that has five children with the disease.

Werewolf Syndrome: the wolf people

When two year-old Abys DeJesus grew dark, hairy patches on her face, doctors said she has a condition known as Human Werewolf Syndrome. The disease is called werewolf syndrome because people with it look like werewolves - except without the sharp teeth and claws. In Mexico, a large family of men had hair that covered their faces and upper bodies. Two brothers were even offered a part in the X-Files but they turned down the offer.

Blue Skin Disorder: the blue people

A large family simply known as the "blue people" lived in the hills around Troublesome Creek in Kentucky until the 1960s. They were the blue Fugates. Most of them lived past the age of 80, with no serious illness - just blue skin. The trait was passed on from generation to generation. People with this condition have blue, plum, indigo or almost purple skin.

Pica: the urge to eat non-food substances

People diagnosed with Pica have an insatiable urge to eat non-food substances like dirt, paper, glue and clay. Though it is believed to be linked with mineral deficiency, health experts have found no real cause and no cure for this disorder.

Vampire Disease: pain from the sun

There are people out there who go to great lengths to avoid the sun. If they are caught in the sun, their skin will blister. Some of them have pain and blistering as soon as the sun touches their skin. Ok, so they're not actually vampires. They don't drink blood and sleep in coffins, but they do suffer from a rare disease that has vampire-like symptoms.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome: time, space and body image are distorted

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), or micropsia, is a disorienting neurological condition which affects human visual perception. Subjects perceive humans, parts of humans, animals, and inanimate objects as substantially smaller than in reality. Generally, the object perceived appears far away or extremely close at the same time. For example, a family pet, such as a dog, may appear the size of a mouse, or a normal car may look shrunk to scale. This leads to another name for the condition, Lilliput sight or Lilliputian hallucinations, named after the small people in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. The condition is in terms of perception only; the mechanics of the eye are not affected, only the brain's interpretation of information passed from the eyes.

Blaschko's lines: strange stripes all over the body

Blaschko's lines are an extremely rare and unexplained phenomenon of human anatomy first presented in 1901 by German dermatologist Alfred Blaschko. Neither a specific disease nor a predictable symptom of a disease, Blaschko's lines are an invisible pattern built into human DNA. Many inherited and acquired diseases of the skin or mucosa manifest themselves according to these patterns, creating the visual appearance of stripes. The cause of the stripes is thought to result from mosaicism; they do not correspond to nervous, muscular, or lymphatic systems. What makes them more remarkable is that they correspond quite closely from patient to patient, usually forming a "V" shape over the spine and "S" shapes over the chest, stomach, and sides.

Walking Corpse Syndrome: they believe to have died

It is a syndrome of mental depression and suicidal tendencies, in which the patient complains of having lost everything: possessions, part of or entire body, often believing that he or she has died and is a walking corpse. This delusion is usually expanded to the degree that the patient might claim that he can smell his own rotting flesh and feel worms crawling through his skin. The latter phenomenon is a recurring experience of people chronically deprived of sleep or suffering amphetamine/cocaine psychosis. Paradoxically, being "dead" often gives the patient the nation of being immortal.

Jumping frenchman disorder: weird reflexes

The main characteristic is that patients are extremely startled by an unexpected noise or sight. It's not just twitching when someone sneaks up behind you. Patients with this disorder flail their arms, cry out and repeat words. First identified in some of Maine's lumberjacks of French-Canadian origin, the odd reflex has been identified in other parts of the world, too.

The Pattern [Feb. 12th, 2007|09:57 pm]
[mood | stressed]

As the pattern goes, when I'm upset I bang up my car. Yup, This morning I left to go to my new job, and of course me being all messed up in the head I drive towards the French Tart. Sheesh. Then finally getting to the job I'm supposed to be at, I back up into a telephone pole. Life is GRAND!

But in a better note.. yes I'm actually gonna write about something positive in my livejournal... I made my first sign at work and the client loved it.

Birdo? A transexual? [Feb. 4th, 2007|08:48 pm]
Although Nintendo of America classifies Birdo as female and some classify it as transsexual, the first edition game manual for Super Mario Bros. 2 describes Birdo as follows: "He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called 'Birdetta.'" Based on this description, it is arguable that Birdo is the first transgendered video game character.[1][2] Subsequent printings of the game manaul delete the Birdetta sentence but retains the first description.[

In Japan, Birdo is known as "Catherine" and purportedly enjoys being called "Cathy". However, the Birdo character has always been male in the original Japanese versions. Presumeably to avoid controversy, Nintendo of America has localized Birdo as female in future appearances of the character. It was speculated that Birdo was possibly transgendered, and Nintendo of America would eventually retcon this tidbit to avoid raising any concerns about the character's transsexuality.

Keep in mind, I am NOT a transexual :D

Xmas time [Dec. 24th, 2006|12:04 am]
[mood | anxious]

It's xmas time and it doesn't even feel like it. For the first time, my parents aren't doing anything for xmas eve or nyrs eve. Since Uncle Sal died things have been awful.
Maybe things will get better after these first holidays without him. I hope so, I can't really deal with being upset anymore.

All i've been lately is such a negative downer. I'm gonna try to be more optmistic. It's going to be weird, my bf is going away for 3 1/2 months, I don't know how things are gonna be with that, it'll be an experience for the both of us and I have to find myself a real job. I hate change, but then again I need a change is what i desperatly need.

Let this year be a great year, cause for heaven's sake.. i need it.

Paranormal Picture from my cell phone. [Oct. 16th, 2006|04:58 pm]
[mood | weird]

Scary thing.
Sometimes my phone takes pictures by itself, its weird, but it happens. So a few nights ago I was going through my phone to erase the blank pictures that get taken when smushed in my bag. And I came across this:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Look at that bright, neon orange "flame". What is that? In the picture is my car that was given to me from uncle sal after he passes away 2 mths ago. And its also strange that I didn't even take this picture.

Comments are apprieciated.

Animals! [Jul. 28th, 2006|09:17 pm]
[mood | blah]

I went to the Philly Zoo today with some of my family. It was nice, but very hot. We went with a few youngsters so that led me to ride the ponies and the camels. Not bad, pretty fun.

The Philly zoo beat the Bronx zoo by far. All the animals are close up, and cool animals like Elephants, Okapis, and Giraffes.

My favorite animal now is the "Giant Elephant Shrew". Uh so cute, it's a little rodent that moves his lil nose like an elephant... Lets see if i can google you guys a good pic, one sec.

Got a few:

You should see it when the nose goes up and down... uggghhh

These guys are endangered :(
And I just read that these guys aren't related to an elephant (duh) nor a shrew! They are actually related to my other favorite animal the Dik-Dik!!! Amazing, I guess I'm drawn to these guys. Here are some pics of the Dik-Diks which you can see at the SI Zoo.

They are little, you cant really tell from this picture. If you stood next to it, it's head would probably be almost to your knees.

Animals are cool, aren't they? Usually when people picture "animal" in their mind, they don't picture these crazy interesting odd animals, that for some reason aren't popular with us.
Im gonna see if I can find anymore pictures of unique animals.

Bilbys!

As part of an attempt to increase awareness of the Bilbys plight and to "Australianise" Easter the long, rabbit-like eared Bilby is the new native Australian icon for Easter. In most shops in Australia you can find Chocolate Bilbys, next to the more traditional Chocolate eggs and Rabbits.
I'm gonna buy Choclate Bilbys for Easter now. So after looking at all these animals (which are all sadly endangered) I figured to look up EXTINCT animals. How sad :( We'll never get to see these animals. Damn humans, I know they are to blame :-p
Tasmanian Wolf or Thylacine, Thylacinus cynocephalus The Tasmanian Wolf is not a wolf, but a carnivorous marsupial and a relative of wombats and kangaroos. It even has a pouch. Tasmanian officials promoting ranching paid bounties to hunters. Believed to be extinct for well over half a century, unconfirmed reported sightings persist.

Quagga, of the Karoo Plains and southern Free State of South Africa were a subspecies of the Burchell’s Zebra, although their unique appearance wouldn't necessarily make this apparent. Some thought incorrectly that the Quagga was the female of Burchell's Zebra, probably because the natives gave both zebras the same name.
In the wild, Quaggas, Ostriches and Wildebeests often grazed together in what was termed the "triple alliance". The Quagga's hearing, the Ostrich's eyesight and the Wildibeast's keen sense of smell comprised excellent defense from predators for the entire herd. However, its limited range made it all the more vulnerable and Quaggas were hunted to the brink of extinction in the mid 19th Century by settlers razing sheep, goats and other livestock. The last Quagga died in in 1883 in an Amsterdam Zoo.

I hope you enjoyed learning! ;)

I just saw my phone bill and it was $107. It's usually $40. I went over $60 somewhat minutes without even knowing it. $0.45 a freaking minute. And my night hours start at 9 when I thought they started at 7 like they used to. AND I signed up for a discounted plan for being a Suny student, and they never gave me the discount these past months, and now i cant do anything about it cause im not a student anymore. FUCK

Im gonna die of being poor. And thankyou French Tart for assuring me there would be enough hours for me to quit my other job. Yea, thanks alot.
